Know what is duty-free as per the new baggage rules of 2026

Bengaluru, Feb 10: The central government has now made some items, including gold, duty-free for passengers arriving in India. The baggage rules 2026 have come into effect officially from February 02. According to this, passengers arriving by air or sea can take some products home without paying any duty fee.

Apart from Indian residents, tourists of Indian origin or tourist visas, foreigners holding appropriate visas are allowed to bring products worth about Rs 75,000 into India without paying any duty. Earlier, the limit was Rs 50,000. But now, as per the new baggage rules, it has been increased to Rs 25,000.

These rules also set a separate limit for foreign tourists. Foreign tourists arriving in India by air or sea are allowed to carry items worth up to Rs 25,000 duty-free, but only if they are carried on the person or in their accompanying luggage. These rules replace the Baggage Rules of 2016, notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in February.

How much gold can be imported from abroad duty-free?

When a resident or tourist of Indian origin who has been living abroad for more than a year returns to India, the CBIC said that jewellery weighing up to forty grams if brought by a female traveller or twenty grams if brought by a male traveller in the actual luggage is allowed to be brought into India duty-free. This means that if you are an Indian resident or a person of Indian origin who has been living abroad for more than a year, you can bring some jewellery with you without paying customs duty. This means that a female traveller can bring 40 grams and a male traveller can bring 20 grams of jewellery.

Jewellery cannot be brought in duty-free for the purpose of sale

The jewellery you bring from abroad must be for personal use. It cannot be brought in for the purpose of sale. Passengers aged 18 years or above, excluding crew members, are allowed to bring one new laptop, including a notepad, into India duty-free in their checked baggage, the airline said in a statement.
