Thane: An incident has come to light in Maharashtra where attackers who forgot their humanity shot an arrow at a monkey’s neck and injured it.

This incident took place in Thane, Maharashtra. Tired of the menace of monkeys, people have forgotten their humanity and are now attacking monkeys themselves. In this horrific incident, an arrow fired by one of the people went through the neck of a baby monkey and split its jaw.
The injured animal, a bonnet macaque, was first seen by local residents. Later, the Thane Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) was informed. Upon receiving the news, the staff rushed to the spot immediately. With the help of Yeyur Range Forest Department officials, the rescue team safely captured the monkey within 10-15 minutes and took it to the hospital for treatment.
The arrow entered through the neck and exited near the jaw. The monkey has been shifted to the ICU facility where veterinary experts are monitoring its treatment.
2nd case in 4 days
This is not the first such attack on monkeys. A similar case was reported earlier. This is the second case in a span of 4 days. Four days ago, another monkey was found seriously injured near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
In that incident too, the arrow pierced the monkey’s stomach. This is the second attack in the area in four days. The repeated incidents have raised concerns among animal welfare groups and forest officials.
Investigation under Wildlife Protection Act
Forest officials suspect that the attack may have been carried out by poachers. The Maharashtra Forest Department, Thane zone, has registered a case under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and efforts are on to identify and trace the accused.
Forest officials are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the attacker. Officials have assured that the culprit will be brought to justice soon.
