LPG cylinder booking rules to change from May 1

New Delhi, April 29: LPG gas cylinder booking rules will change from May 1. Changes will be implemented on how and when customers book their cylinders. The new rules include long bookings, mandatory OTP-based delivery, eKYC and a possible LPG price hike. Although these changes are aimed at improving the distribution system and reducing misuse, they are likely to affect everyday users.

With LPG cylinder rules becoming a trending topic from May 1, it is advised to understand the new system in advance to avoid any supply disruption or booking delay.

Booking gap

This is one of the major changes in LPG booking rules. The waiting period between two bookings is likely to increase. Customers will have to wait longer to order a refill. In urban areas, this gap can increase to about 25 days. But in rural areas, it can extend to 45 days. This means that gas consumption will have to be planned more carefully.

OTP-based delivery

According to the new LPG cylinder rules that will come into effect from May 1, OTP-based delivery is likely to become mandatory. Customers will have to share an OTP with the delivery agent at the time of receiving the cylinder. The government said that this measure is important to ensure that the cylinders are delivered to the right person and to reduce fraud.

Aadhaar-based eKYC

Another major update in the LPG gas cylinder booking rules is the implementation of Aadhaar-based eKYC. Customers, especially beneficiaries of government schemes, may have to complete eKYC to continue availing LPG services and subsidies. Skipping this step could lead to disruption in supply.

LPG price likely to rise

Along with the rule changes, there is also talk of a hike in LPG prices. Domestic LPG cylinder prices have already increased by around Rs 60 in the wake of the West Asian conflict.

Daily update on LPG distribution, Centre moves against black market sale

There is a gradual shift towards piped natural gas (PNG). In areas where PNG is available, consumers are being advised to switch to it over time. The Centre is also planning to make it mandatory. Failure to adopt PNG is likely to impact LPG supply in the future.

How to book an LPG cylinder

Despite the changes, booking an LPG cylinder is very simple. Customers can use multiple methods like WhatsApp, SMS, missed call, IVRS or official mobile apps and websites. To avoid problems, booking should be done using a registered mobile number. The government has said that it is important to follow the official channels to ensure safe and correct booking.
