Chandigarh: National archery coach Kuldeep Vedwan, who gained fame through the achievements of para archers, has been sentenced to 5 years in rigorous imprisonment in the POCSO case. A fast-track court in Haryana has sentenced 42-year-old Kuldeep and also imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakh.

In 2023, Kuldeep had gone to a room where a younger athlete was at the SAI center in Sonipat and sexually harassed her. He had said that if she cooperated, he would make her a ‘big athlete’. The athlete’s family had filed a complaint against this. Kuldeep, who was later arrested, was released from jail on bail before the 2024 Tokyo Paralympics. The court recently found him guilty. The sentence was announced on Wednesday.

Kuldeep had gained immense fame through the achievements of Indian para athletes. Sheetal Devi, who is amputee, won the Asian Para Games gold medal and also became the world champion during Kuldeep’s coaching tenure. Recently, Payal Nag, who is amputee, defeated Sheetal in the World Archery Championship. Kuldeep was also Payal’s coach.
