During the journey, their truck suddenly broke down about 80 kilometers from Asmaka. The driver, his assistants and passengers tried desperately to repair the truck. But failed. They also ran out of water. The passengers were stranded in the scorching sun and extreme temperatures. With no means of supply, the 49 people died one by one.

Two miraculously survived the incident. To save their lives, they walked about 50 kilometers in the scorching heat. They first reached a water source. Then they reached the town of Assamaka and informed the authorities about the terrible incident. After receiving information, a team led by Governor General Ibrahim Bulama Issa arrived at the scene. But unfortunately, they were shocked to see the truck piled up with bodies. Rescue workers carried out a mass burial.

The region is considered a major transit point for refugees and migrants seeking a better future in Europe. The truck, which left the town of Talhandek in Mali, traveled for several days in the desert. This part of the Sahara is known for its rugged terrain and record temperatures.
