Delhi, Oct 23: This is a crucial update for users of WhatsApp and Telegram. Previously, one could use WhatsApp and Telegram on a mobile device regardless of whether a SIM card was inserted—as long as the apps were installed, they functioned perfectly. However, this is set to change, as the Central Government is introducing new regulations.

Until now, it was possible to chat on WhatsApp and Telegram using only a Wi-Fi connection, even without a SIM card in the phone. Starting January 1, 2027, however, an active SIM card will be mandatory on your mobile device; otherwise, your access to WhatsApp and Telegram will be immediately terminated.
Indeed, the Central Department of Telecommunications has mandated ‘SIM Binding’ rules to curb the activities of cybercriminals—individuals who often operate from abroad without a SIM card, using only the internet to defraud people in India.
