Safaris suspended in Bandipur-Nagarhole: Wildlife sanctuaries lose Rs 6 crore in revenue

Mysore: The temporary suspension of wildlife safari services in Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole Tiger Reserve from November 7 to February 21 has resulted in a combined revenue loss of around Rs. 6 crore for the two major wildlife sanctuaries.

The suspension of safaris during this period has significantly affected the revenue of the forest department. Of the two reserves, Bandipur Tiger Reserve has reportedly suffered a loss of around Rs.2.5 crore.

Nagarhole Tiger Reserve has suffered a loss of around Rs. 3.5 crore during the same period, The New Indian Express has learnt. The decision to suspend safari operations was taken after a series of incidents of tigers roaming in the fringe villages surrounding the two protected forest areas was reported.

Tigers had killed three people in villages on the forest border. The incidents have caused widespread concern among residents and officials after several people were injured and cattle were poached.

Following the incidents, Forest Minister Ishwar B Khandre announced a temporary suspension of safari activities as a precautionary measure and has asked officials to intensify monitoring of tiger movements in the area.

While the cancellation of safaris was intended to address safety concerns and manage the situation on the ground, it has had a significant economic impact on tourism in the region.
