Supreme Court allows Vinesh Phogat to participate in selection trials

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has allowed veteran wrestler and Olympian Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games 2026. It has expressed concern over judicial interference in sports governance matters.

If it had been someone else, it would have been a different matter. But she has made the country proud, the court said.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has objected to the way the Delhi High Court handled the matter. It said that easy and quick judicial intervention in such cases can cause problems in the national and international sports schedules.

The Asian Games selection trials will be held in the national capital on May 30 and 31. The Wrestling Federation of India had approached the Supreme Court challenging the order passed by the Delhi High Court Division Bench on May 22 allowing Vinesh to participate in the trials.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe, which heard the petition, said, “You are an excellent athlete. The country first told Phogat.”
