Bengaluru: As raids by food department officials continue in the state, the food safety department has conducted surprise raids on hostel canteens of 34 government and private medical colleges in Bengaluru. The main objective of these raids was to check the quality and hygiene of the food served to students.
During the raids, violations of food safety rules were found in many canteens. Expired items like semolina and milk were seized. Unhygienic conditions like rotten vegetables, contaminated meat and cockroach infestation were reported at some places.
A total of five canteens have been issued notices for violating the rules. Officials said that action has been taken to produce the violators in court for trial.
These raids are necessary to ensure food safety as per FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) regulations. The department said that such measures will continue to be taken to protect public health.
