Indiscriminate Shooting at a Guwahati Hotel: Six Dead, Including Women; Accused Arrested

Guwahati, Oct 27: A horrific shooting incident occurred on Monday night at ‘Hotel Bilas Inn’ in the Lachit Nagar area (Bora Service area) of Guwahati, Assam. A total of six people, including two women, lost their lives, and several others sustained serious injuries. Preliminary investigations suggest that a property dispute was the primary cause of the incident. Here is the report:

Background of the Incident:

About a year ago, the hotel had been leased to an individual named Ghanakanta Gogoi. Preliminary investigations indicate that a severe dispute regarding the property and the lease agreement between the hotel owners and the lessee led to this bloodshed.

During the attack at the hotel, four individuals died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The deceased include the hotel owner, Helena Bharali; her son, Devarshi Kashyap; their driver, Narayan Das; and another individual, Satyendra Pathak. It is reported that four of the victims belonged to the same family. Furthermore, the police, acting under the leadership of Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, have arrested the prime accused, Ghanakanta Gogoi, along with another suspect. A .32 caliber pistol, believed to have been used in the attack, has also been seized. The injured individuals have been admitted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

The incident has caused significant alarm in Guwahati, prompting opposition parties to launch a scathing attack on the Assam government regarding the state of law and order. Following the incident, Assam State Congress President and Member of Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi, expressed deep concern. He stated that the event highlights a failure in public safety and law and order in Guwahati, and demanded that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma—who also holds the Home portfolio—take responsibility for the incident.
