Kanjan, who killed Martanda elephant, permanently banned from Dasara – Minister Eshwar Khandre orders

Bengaluru, May 20: The elephant ‘Kanjan’, which was responsible for the death of another elephant ‘Martanda’ at Dubare elephant camp, has been permanently banned from the world-famous Mysore Dasara Mahotsav.

This decision has been taken on the strict orders of Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, and this important step has been taken due to the aggressive behavior of the elephant Kanjan.

Taking the recent unpleasant incident at the Dubare elephant camp in Kodagu seriously, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has issued a strict order to the higher officials to completely exclude the elephant Kanjan from the upcoming Mysore Dasara Mahotsav programs.

It is reported that the higher officials and ministers came to this tough decision only after thoroughly examining the extremely aggressive and stubborn behavior that the elephant Kanjan has repeatedly shown.

This is not the first time

This is not the first time that Kanjan has behaved like this. Kanjan had also created a huge commotion during the rehearsals for the Mysore Dasara Mahotsav in 2024. Kanjan had chased another Dasara elephant in the premises of the Mysore Palace with great fury, creating an atmosphere of extreme anxiety and fear among tourists and officials.

After this, a fierce fight took place between Kanjan and Martanda elephants in the Dubare camp. At this time, Kanjan, who was very aggressive, severely bit Martanda’s stomach, ears and other sensitive parts of the body with his strong tusks, causing serious injuries. A woman also died in this tragedy.

Martanda, who was seriously injured and fighting for his life, was being continuously treated by veterinarians Dr. Mujibh and Chittiappa at the Dubare camp. However, the elephant, Marthanda, died today without treatment due to serious injuries.

Dubare temporary closure

Taking a serious view of the series of aggressive behavior of elephants and the incident in which a woman was killed, the Forest Department has temporarily closed the Dubare elephant camp today as a precautionary measure. Entry of tourists inside the camp has been completely restricted until further official orders.
