Sunlight from Space to Earth: Hyderabad’s Skyroot Joins Hands with the US

Hyderabad, Oct 20: The Indian space sector is witnessing a unique and innovative project designed to bring sunlight to Earth even after dark. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, a private Indian space company, has signed a major agreement with the American space technology firm Reflect Orbital. Skyroot will launch Reflect Orbital’s satellites into space using its indigenous ‘Vikram’ series of rockets.

Reflect Orbital plans to deploy satellites equipped with specialized, giant mirrors into orbit. After sunset, these satellites will redirect sunlight toward specific locations on Earth, providing illumination even during the night. By repurposing natural sunlight, this approach eliminates the need to construct new lighting infrastructure on the ground. Here is the post from X:

Key Benefits and Challenges of This Technology

Increased Solar Power Generation: By directing sunlight onto solar power plants even after sunset, the duration of electricity generation can be extended.

Use in Emergency Situations: This could prove helpful for urgent search and rescue operations, as well as for infrastructure construction work carried out at night.

Concerns of Astronomers: There are concerns that artificial light could hinder astronomers observing the night sky and lead to light pollution. Reflect Orbital has stated that it intends to engage in discussions with scientists and regulatory authorities regarding this matter.

A Historic Achievement for India in the Private Space Sector:

On July 18, by successfully placing a payload into orbit using the Vikram-1 rocket launched from Sriharikota, Skyroot Aerospace became the first private Indian company to launch its own orbital rocket. Following the launch for the German firm ‘DCubed,’ the American company ‘Reflect Orbital’ has now become Skyroot’s second major international client. This agreement underscores the growing confidence that global companies have in India’s private launch capabilities.
