What happened?
A student opened fire at a school in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi, near the Thai capital Bangkok, killing a total of 6 people, including a teacher, and seriously injuring 15 students. The attacker, who is believed to have been a student of the same school, committed suicide by shooting himself after the attack.
Grandparents killed with grandfather’s pistol:
This 9th grader, a minor, came to school with a 9mm pistol belonging to his grandfather and started a sudden attack on teachers and classmates. The teachers and students died in the incident. Earlier, before arriving at school, the underage student had allegedly shot and killed his grandparents at home. Meanwhile, the police are investigating the motive behind the shooting.
Commenting on the incident, Dhani Anutin Charnvirakul said, “This is a very terrible incident. This should never have happened. How could this happen in our country?”
Such incidents have happened before.
In February this year, an 18-year-old youth stole a police officer’s gun and entered a school in Hat Yai district in southern Thailand and opened fire. The school principal was killed and two students were injured in the incident. Before that, a former police officer who had been fired from his job had entered a children’s day-care center and carried out a horrific attack with a gun and a knife. A total of 36 people, including 22 sleeping children, lost their lives in the incident. The killer then killed his wife and son in a domestic dispute and committed suicide.
Accordingly, it is estimated that there are more than 10 million legal and illegal guns in the public domain in Thailand. Despite the strict law of 10 years in prison for illegal possession of guns, people continue to buy them illegally. Therefore, such cases are common in Thailand.
