Jakarta, September 14: A large passenger ship carrying approximately 240 passengers has lost contact while en route across Indonesia’s Java Sea. The vessel, traveling from East Java to the island of Borneo, encountered adverse weather conditions, leading to a loss of communication and raising serious concerns about the safety of those on board. Indonesian rescue forces have launched an urgent search operation to locate the ship.
Ship loses contact: The missing vessel has been identified as ‘Virgo Transport 8’. It had departed from Surabaya—Indonesia’s second-largest city—and was heading towards Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. Rescue official I Putu Sudayana stated that contact with the ship was lost due to sudden adverse weather and rough seas encountered during the voyage.
The ship’s last GPS location was recorded in the middle of the Java Sea, approximately 148 kilometers from the port of Banjarmasin. Following an emergency alert from the ship’s operator, PT Virgo, special search vessels and divers have been deployed from the Basirih rescue base. No casualties reported so far: Although contact with the vessel has been completely lost, there are no official reports regarding it sinking or any casualties.
