Dakshina Kannada DC Darshan Directs Officials to Take Measures Against Transgender Individuals Loitering on Highways at Night

Mangaluru, Oct 10: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has directed officials to take necessary measures to curb activities where transgender individuals encourage or engage in illegal acts while loitering on national highways at night.

He was presiding over a meeting of the district-level coordination and monitoring committee for gender minorities at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Friday.

Numerous complaints have been received regarding transgender individuals standing on national highways at night and causing inconvenience to motorists. In this regard, the initial step should be to create awareness and advise them against loitering on the highways. He instructed the police to take action if the issue persists in the future.

Representatives from transgender organizations present at the meeting stated that transgender individuals from other states are coming to Mangaluru and engaging in illegal activities, and urged that action be taken against them.

Officials informed the meeting that a list of 15 transgender individuals without housing sites has been submitted to the City Corporation. Necessary steps have also been taken to provide them with financial incentives for self-employment through the Women’s Development Corporation.

According to a recent survey, 96 transgender individuals have registered their names in the district. Officials stated that an opportunity has been provided to apply via the Seva Sindhu portal for their rehabilitation.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Narvade Vinayak Karbari, Deputy Director of the Women and Child Development Department Sridhar, representatives of transgender associations, and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
