Meat sale, animal slaughter completely banned

Bengaluru, April 29: There is important news for meat lovers and traders in the state capital Bengaluru. ‘Buddha Purnima’ is being celebrated on May 1, and in this context, the Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA) has issued an order completely banning the sale of meat and animal slaughter throughout the city.

Strict order of the authority:

The Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department of the Greater Bangalore Authority has issued an official circular in this regard. Friday, 01-05-2026, is the holy day of Buddha Purnima. In honor of the birthday of Buddha, who spread the message of non-violence, animal slaughter has been banned in all slaughterhouses under the authority. In addition, the sale of meat in shops or any shops has been completely banned.

Where is it applicable?

This order is applicable to all the zones under the jurisdiction of the Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA). Major markets, meat shops and retail outlets in Bengaluru city will not be allowed to trade on that day. As per the government rules, a ban has been imposed on the sale of meat on Buddha Purnima day since long and it has been continued this year as well. The public and meat shop owners have been requested to cooperate with this order.

Importance of Ahimsa Day:

Gautama Buddha is the pioneer of non-violence and peace. The day of his birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana is celebrated as ‘Buddha Purnima’. The government and local authorities implement this ban with the aim of ensuring that no living being is killed on this day. Residents of Bengaluru city should keep in mind that meat will not be available on May 1.
