Spain: At least 21 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in a collision between two high-speed trains in the southern region of Andalusia.

A passenger train travelling from Malaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz on Sunday evening, jumped onto another track and hit an oncoming train, Spain’s Adip rail network operator posted on social media.
A police spokesman told AFP that 21 people had died. At least 73 people were injured, Andalusia’s top emergency official Antonio Sanz said.
He said the death toll could rise. Transport Minister Oscar Puente told reporters that 30 people had been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Malaga-Madrid train was carrying around 300 people, the train operator Irio said. The fire chief said hundreds of passengers were trapped in the colliding trains, hampering emergency services.

The tragic train accident in Adamuz has caused deep sorrow. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on social media that the country stands by the victims in this tragedy.
