Kannada flag on Mount Everest – Historic achievement by two adventurers

Bengaluru, May 25: Two mountaineers from Bengaluru have set a record by climbing Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, after a 46-day arduous adventure.

Businessman Santosh Devarajappa (40) and ophthalmologist Dr. Chinmayee Trishulamurthy (45) have succeeded in climbing Mount Everest.

The adventure was undertaken as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Karnataka Mountaineering Association (KMA).

The two reached the 29,031-foot (8,848.86-meter) Everest peak at around 12.10 pm via the south-eastern ‘South Col’ route in Nepal, the association said.

The mountaineers had started their journey from Bengaluru on April 4 and left for Kathmandu. As part of the physical conditioning and preparation required for the Everest climb, they had also successfully scaled the 20,070-foot Lobuche East peak on April 22.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had flagged off the expedition at Vidhana Soudha on March 9. Later, a special farewell program was held at Yuvanika in Bengaluru on March 22 in the presence of adventure enthusiasts, friends and well-wishers.

The two successfully reached the summit of Everest after facing severe weather, low oxygen, high altitude challenges and difficult terrain during the 46-day journey.

Karnataka Mountaineering Association’s S. Srivatsa said, “This achievement assumes special significance as KMA completes its 60th anniversary. He said that for the past several years, the association has been working to instill interest in mountaineering and adventure sports among its more than 20,000 members.

At the same time, he also thanked the government for providing space for training and adventure activities at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium.
