Mangaluru, September 30: A major explosion has occurred near the Central Government-owned Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL). The blast caused tremors in the Jokatte Panchayat building and surrounding houses, dislodging doors and windows. Thick smoke has billowed into the sky.
Fire tenders from across the Mangaluru area have rushed to the MRPL site, and safety measures are currently being assessed.
It is suspected that a boiler exploded at the MRPL Phase-3 plant; thick smoke was seen rising into the sky immediately after a loud blast was heard.
The smoke has spread to the Jokatte and Surathkal areas. Villagers in the vicinity have been alarmed by the sudden explosion. An official statement regarding the exact cause of the incident and the extent of the damage is awaited.
