Science Model Competition and Exhibition at St Aloysius PU College

Mangaluru: Innovative solutions to real-world challenges took centre stage at the two-day Genesis 2026, Science Model Competition and Exhibition organised by St Aloysius PU College at Loyola Hall on August 18 and 19. The exhibition brought together more than 130 Science models, with nearly 700 students participating and presenting their ideas across a wide range of scientific disciplines.

The exhibition featured projects under diverse themes including Water and Environment, Human Health and Biology, Electronics and Automation, Computer Science and Smart Technology, Mathematics, Data and Statistics, Energy and Innovation, Physics and Applied Science, Sustainable Living and Smart Society. The variety of exhibits reflected the students’ curiosity, scientific temper, problem-solving abilities and growing interest in technology and innovation.

The exhibits ranged from practical applications of emerging technologies to innovative solutions addressing contemporary social and environmental challenges. Projects such as Genesis AI, Sign Language to Text, Hospital Management System, Smart Attention System, Expense Tracker and College Website demonstrated the students’ interest in using digital technologies to create practical solutions. Models such as Hydraulic Robotic Arm, Electromagnetic Crane, Hydraulic Lift, Robotics and Mechanism Drone showcased their understanding of automation, engineering and mechanical systems.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility emerged as another significant area of exploration. Projects including Smart Rooftop Garden, Smart Eco Village, Empowering Sustainable Cities, Green Loop, Self-Healing Roads, Renewable Energy for Rural Areas, Smart City, Alternative Fuel Tank System – E20 and Ecobin AI explored innovative approaches to resource conservation, sustainable development and responsible use of technology.

Among the notable exhibits was Code in the Sole, an assistive smart shoe designed for people with visual impairments. The model uses an Arduino Nano, ultrasonic sensors and vibration motors to detect obstacles and alert the wearer through vibrations. The project demonstrated the potential of assistive technology to provide greater independence and safety for people with visual impairments. It had earlier won first place at the taluk and district levels and was among the top 10 innovations at a state-level competition in Dharwad.

Another major attraction, Trauma Seal, is a six-layer emergency wound-care patch designed to seal wounds, promote clotting, protect the injury and provide pain relief. An innovative colour-changing indicator alerts the user to the possibility of infection by responding to changes in the wound environment. The project showcased the potential of combining materials science, healthcare and technology to develop practical emergency-care solutions.

A hydroponic farming system demonstrated how plants can be cultivated without soil by circulating nutrient-rich water through growing channels. The model highlighted the potential of hydroponics to address challenges such as limited cultivable land and water scarcity while making efficient use of available resources. The Smart Rooftop Garden and Smart Eco Village projects similarly explored sustainable approaches to food production and community living.

The Myoelectric Prosthetic Arm Demonstrator explored the use of EMG signals generated by muscle activity to control the movement of a prosthetic arm. Bringing together concepts from biology, electronics and mechanical engineering, the model demonstrated the basic principles behind assistive technologies for people with limb loss.

A Robotic Arm featuring six degrees of freedom showcased the possibilities of automation and intelligent manufacturing. Built using 3D-printed components, servo motors and an ESP32 microcontroller, the model demonstrated the potential applications of robotics in areas such as manufacturing, healthcare and other technology-driven industries.

The exhibition also featured projects focused on energy generation and conservation. Footstep Power Generation Using Piezoelectric Discs explored the conversion of mechanical energy from footsteps into electrical energy, while Waste Heat to Electricity demonstrated the conversion of waste heat into electrical energy using a Thermoelectric Generator based on the Seebeck effect. These projects encouraged students to explore ways of recovering and utilising energy that might otherwise be wasted.

The Smart Classroom Energy Conservation System demonstrated how automation can reduce unnecessary energy consumption. Using IR and DHT11 sensors with an Arduino, the model automatically controls lighting and cooling according to classroom occupancy and temperature, while an OLED display provides real-time information.

Li-Fi for Life introduced students to Light Fidelity, a wireless communication technology that uses LED light to transmit data instead of radio waves. The project explored its potential applications in areas such as defence and healthcare, particularly where secure or radio-frequency-sensitive communication may be required.

Students also explored the application of data and mathematics to everyday situations through projects such as Probability, Statistics in Survey, Transportation Survey and Cricket Analysis. These models demonstrated how mathematical and statistical tools can be used to interpret data, identify patterns and support informed decision-making.

Safety and disaster preparedness were also represented through projects such as Automatic Fire Extinguisher, Flame Sensor, Disaster Management, Earthquake-Resistant Structures and Smart Cell-Powered Safety Pathway. These exhibits highlighted the role of science and technology in preventing risks and improving safety in homes, institutions and public spaces.

On August 18, the exhibition was formally inaugurated in the presence of faculty and students. Experts from various fields were introduced to the students and entrusted with the responsibility of evaluating the exhibits. Their participation provided students with an opportunity to receive informed assessment and valuable feedback on the scientific principles, practical applications and innovative aspects of their projects.

Addressing the students, Rev. Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, Principal, emphasised the importance of scientific enquiry, critical thinking and innovation in shaping the future. Referring to premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technology, he recalled Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision of such institutions as the “temples of modern India.”

He encouraged students to recognise that failure is an essential part of the learning process and urged them to approach challenges with perseverance, curiosity and an open mind. He also stressed that Artificial Intelligence should be used responsibly as a tool to enhance learning and creativity, without compromising originality, independent thinking and human ingenuity.

The students were further encouraged to become creators and problem-solvers who use science and technology responsibly to address pressing concerns such as pollution, climate change, sustainable energy, food security and public health.

The student convenors-Aarush, Ankith, Aryan, Avin, Cheyenna, Prishel, Sahithya, Shanel Monterio, Shashank, Shawn, Skanda and Vedanth Bhat, along with the staff convenors, Arun D’Souza, Dulcin Sequeira, Anusha K and Vinitha D’Silva, coordinated the Science Model Competition and Exhibition.

The two-day exhibition thus went beyond being a display of scientific models. It provided a meaningful platform for students to experiment, collaborate, question existing ideas and transform classroom learning into practical applications. The diverse range of projects-from AI and robotics to renewable energy, healthcare, sustainability, mathematics and disaster management-reflected the growing scientific temper among young learners and their willingness to explore innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.

The Genesis 2026 Science Model Exhibition ultimately celebrated the spirit of inquiry and innovation, encouraging students to look at science not merely as a subject of study but as a means of understanding the world and creating solutions for a better, safer and more sustainable future.
