Sikkim, Sept 25: A massive landslide occurred on Thursday night in Rimbhi village, West Sikkim, following days of continuous, heavy rainfall. In this hilly region, which falls under the Yuksom-Tashiding Assembly constituency, the sudden collapse of soil and boulders from the hillside caused extensive damage to roads and public property.
Although the incident took place in the middle of the night, the district administration has confirmed that, fortunately, there was no loss of life. Disaster management teams have rushed to the site and are clearing the debris from the road; residents in low-lying areas have been advised to exercise caution.
Landslides caused by loose soil are common during the monsoon season in Sikkim, located in the Himalayan foothills; when major connecting roads are cut off, the local administration promptly arranges for alternative routes.
