Bengaluru, Aug 11: An incident of soil collapse during underpass work has taken place near Kanteerava Studio Underpass in Bengaluru.
Soil was dug to a depth of about 20 feet on the road for underpass work. Today, as usual, while the workers were engaged in the work, the soil barrier suddenly collapsed from above. At this time, five workers at the site were trapped under the soil and were unable to breathe. Thanks to the timeliness of the staff and the public, three workers who were trapped under the soil were safely pulled out. Unfortunately, two other workers died after being trapped under the soil.
About 20 feet of soil was dug for underpass work on the road. However, the soil suddenly collapsed while they were working. During this time, one worker died while trying to rescue them, while the other died on the way to the hospital. A rescue operation was carried out with the help of locals. Some of them have been admitted to a private hospital. As soon as the matter was known, police and additional fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene and conducted a rescue operation on the suspicion that anyone else was trapped under the soil.
BDA was carrying out work near FTI Circle. The soil collapsed while the water filled in the pit was being emptied for laying RCC. It is learnt that five workers were present at the spot at that time. Three of them ran away as the soil collapsed.
Parimal (31), who was trapped in the soil, died on the spot, while Sonaram (26) was pulled out and sent to the hospital. It is learnt that Sonaram died at Kanva Hospital. Sadanand, Sunil and Imtiaz were injured in the incident.
North Division DCP Nemagowda said: North Division DCP Nemagowda responded to the incident and said that a serious incident took place at 11 am today in the Nandini Layout police station area. Five workers were working. At this time, the accident occurred due to a landslide. Two people were trapped in the mud due to the landslide. One was lifted up and admitted to the hospital. He died in the hospital. Another worker is trapped under the mud. Work is underway to retrieve his dead body. There is information that the work was being done by the BDA. We are investigating this. It is learnt that the workers are from Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal, he informed.
