New Delhi, Sept. 14: Scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have forecast a likelihood of three powerful cyclones forming in the northern Indian Ocean during the final quarter of the year (October to December). While cyclones typically raise concerns for coastal regions, these systems are expected to bring relief—acting as a boon—to several states, including Karnataka, which are currently grappling with severe rainfall deficits and drought conditions.
It is common for cyclones to develop in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal due to atmospheric disturbances during the post-monsoon period, which follows the conclusion of the monsoon rains. Meteorological models developed by ISRO scientists indicate that, given the current atmospheric conditions, there is a possibility of three major cyclones forming between October and the end of the year.

Heavy Rainfall Likely Along Gujarat and Maharashtra Coasts:
Preliminary reports suggest that the influence of these cyclones could lead to extremely heavy rainfall along the coastal regions of Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, scientists are closely monitoring current weather conditions and have clarified that the exact points of origin and the specific coastal areas the cyclones might strike will only be known once the weather systems have fully formed.

With the monsoon failing this year, the shadow of a severe drought looms over most districts in Karnataka. Water levels in major reservoirs have dropped significantly, leading to a crisis regarding both agricultural activities and drinking water supplies. However, if the cyclones predicted by ISRO move towards the west coast or the interior regions of South India, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall across parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
This has sparked hope among the farming community that increased inflows into the state’s major dams could help alleviate the drought situation to some extent.
